Pascal* Paskel Pye of Walterboro is wheeled to his room by his son Paul at the Veterans Victory House state nursing home in Walterboro on Wednesday.
The 84-year-old War War II veteran was the first-ever patient admitted to the facility.
Moments later, Helen Hopkins of Orangeburg became the second. Hopkins served as a nurse during World War II, according to her goddaughter.
It was an emotional day for anyone involved in bringing the 223-bed facility to Colleton County over the last eight years.

MCCAIN NOT COMING
As a side note, Sen. John McCain has canceled his visit to the nursing home on November 11. McCain had agreed to be the keynote speaker.
Bernard Warshaw, pictured in the middle photo, said McCain's spokespeople did not give a reason for the cancellation.
